Special Needs” is an umbrella underneath which a staggering array of diagnoses can be wedged. Children with special needs may have mild learning disabilities or profound cognitive impairment; food allergies or terminal illness; developmental delays that catch up quickly or remain entrenched; occasional panic attacks or serious psychiatric problems The designation is useful for getting needed services, setting appropriate goals, and gaining understanding for a child and stressed family.

Special need children are not just interesting medical problems, subjects of grants and research. Nor should they be called burdens to their families and communities. They are children who need our help, and if we allow them to, they will teach us compassion, they will teach us love. If we come to know these children as we should, they will make us better scientists, better physicians, and thoughtful people.”

TEHECA provides a service called personal care aides where we provide care takers for special needs children and carry out activities like; companionship, maintain child’s hygiene, playing games and feeding.

Duties a care taker for a special needs child are;

  • Monitors symptoms and administer complex medication regimens
  • Assist with personal care
  • Provide emotional support
  • Manage difficult behaviors such as wandering, aggression, & hallucinations
  • Deal with healthcare providers
  • Coordinate care
